Another tragedy on Highway 11

Another tragedy on Highway 11

I live in Ocean View and work in Kona and like hundreds of other people, I commute on Highway 11 each day. I sit home today awaiting the road to be reopened due to a closure caused by yet another fatal accident. Now there is another family or families who have lost their loved ones due to the selfishness of others.

Every day I witness not just one car but sometimes as many as two and three cars passing multiple cars and they are traveling at speeds well in excess of 80 miles per hour. Also every day, I see memorials alongside the road to help us remember those who have been killed on this road.

And here again today, someone has lost their life because people just won’t drive safely. I write in hopes that others will do the same and somehow our voices will be heard and enforcement will be increased on this road especially between Ocean View and Milolili, where the road is straight and some careless neighbors think they can drive as fast as they want with complete disregard for the safety of the rest of us.

Please, join me in asking HPD to patrol this stretch of road for aggressive driving during the hours when these crimes are occurring. The situation has obviously gotten way out of control when people are being killed. If only a police car were patrolling this stretch of road just one day a week, early in the morning when this is happening. And for those of you who think you are doing someone a favor by flashing your lights to warn people about police trying to keep us safe, you are partly to blame. Ask yourself, who are you helping?

If you are reading this and you drive this road in the morning and are tired of having your life put in danger please join me and let your voice be heard.

My heart goes out to those who lost loved ones this morning. Please join me and write some letters, ask for more enforcement during commuting hours on this road. Let’s stop the killing.

Concerts will be missed

Hearing the news that Keauhou Shopping Center is scaling back its Hui Kakoo monthly concerts is going to be missed by many local loyal concert fans as well as visitors to the Kona area. The monthly concerts have brought together music lovers who enjoy sitting in a parking lot in their beach chairs, while patronizing the merchants to enjoy a pizza, burrito, deli sandwich, and a lau lau while watching the concert.

Hopefully, the powers to be will see the value the concert brings to the community and show aloha and continue the monthly concerts.
